OCX 2024
OCX 2024 in Mainz: the first OCX
OCX 2024 ran from 22 to 24 October 2024 at Halle 45 in Mainz, Germany, a restored 1904 tram depot. It was the first edition of the Eclipse Foundation’s annual open source conference, and the successor to EclipseCon.
Over 400 attendees from more than 35 countries took part, and 150+ sessions were recorded across the OCX tracks and the co-located EclipseCon, Open Community for Java, Open Community for Automotive, eSAAM and OSGi Summit programmes.
The four OCX tracks
- Embedded, IoT and Edge. Following the journey of data from the real world up to the cloud and back again, all with open source software. Embedded and microcontroller firmware, gateways, edge computing, connectivity and protocols, device management, digital twins, analytics and visualisation.
- Open Source Security. Tooling, supply chain security, CVE handling and disclosure processes, handling security issues in open source projects, best practices and automation.
- Open Technologies. Design, algorithms and results from open source products built on language-agnostic, vendor neutral specifications. AI and machine learning, release engineering, program analysis, API design, migration stories, and open technology in agriculture, environment and sustainability.
- Open Source and Open Collaboration Practices. Governance, community building, Open Source Program Offices, DevOps and DevSecOps, industry collaboration models, collaboration in the public sector, open standardisation and the funding of open source projects.
The five co-located programmes
One ticket gave access to all of them. Each ran under its own name and branding in 2024. None of them runs as a separately branded event today: from OCX 2026 onward the programme has been presented under one OCX identity.
EclipseCon
The returning Eclipse Foundation developer tools conference, themed “Empowering the Developer Tools Ecosystem”, covering development environments and applications, modelling tools and technologies, tool frameworks and Eclipse IDE, Eclipse Theia and Eclipse Open VSX.
Open Community for Java
New for 2024, and the only edition in which Java ran as its own programme. It spanned open Java runtimes, enterprise Java standards and frameworks, cloud platforms and Java SE, covering Jakarta EE, Eclipse Adoptium and MicroProfile. It also introduced coding lounges for new contributors and unconference sessions.
Open Community for Automotive
New for 2024, covering tooling and toolchains, AI and generative AI, data sharing and dataspaces, automotive mobility and software-defined vehicles, safety and security, and legal and regulations.
OSGi Summit
A one-day gathering on 22 October for users, integrators and implementors of OSGi technology, with a panel discussion.

Questions about OCX 2024
Was OCX 2024 the first OCX?
Yes. OCX 2024, held in Mainz from 22 to 24 October 2024, was the inaugural Open Community Experience. It was also the edition at which EclipseCon returned as part of OCX.
Is EclipseCon still running?
EclipseCon no longer runs as a separate conference. It became a co-located programme inside OCX 2024, and from OCX 2026 onward its subject matter, developer tools and integrated development environments, has been part of the main OCX programme.
Where was OCX 2024 held?
At Halle 45 in Mainz, Germany, a restored 1904 tram depot, from 22 to 24 October 2024.
How many people attended OCX 2024?
430 attendees from more than 35 countries.
Can I still watch the OCX 2024 talks?
Yes. All 161 recorded sessions remain publicly available on YouTube, free to watch, across six playlists: the OCX tracks and keynotes, EclipseCon, Open Community for Java, Open Community for Automotive, eSAAM 2024 and the OSGi Summit.
What was the silent disco format?
The four main OCX tracks at OCX 2024 ran with wireless headsets. Each attendee could tune into any of three simultaneous talks and switch between them freely, without disturbing anyone else in the room.
Was there an OCX 2025?
No. OCX 2024 was held in October 2024 and the next edition was OCX 2026, held in Brussels in April 2026, when the conference moved to a spring slot.
